I Live in Frigid Temperatures & These 5 Winter Coats & Jackets Save Me Every Year

Warm coats and jackets

Now that we live in Colorado, I finally have an excuse to addict my jacket and coat. Some people like bags and some like shoes… I’m all about coats and jackets. For those of you who don’t know, I grew up in Watertown, New York so I I really know the cold. Not just below freezing temperatures, but below zero temperatures! So you can trust me when I say the coat is really warm. There are some basic types of coats and jackets that most women use (here you are) in your closet. I unpack the necessary winter coats and jackets (in no particular order) less.

If you are interested in how to layer your clothes to stay warm, be sure to watch this video or read this post where I take it step by step.

#1) Puffer coat or jacket

Getting a puffer coat that you love is a must if you live in a cold climate. Personally, I love Sam. Jackets and coats. I am now assembling a set of atomizers. Ha! I never thought I would say that. I have the navy blue sprayer, the long black sprayer, the cool and short ivory sprayer (still available in brown), and the striped blower which is very fun. The striped stripe is sold in blue but is still available in black and white, which is even better because it’s more versatile!

If you don’t already have a basic black sprayer, I suggest you get one first. But, if you have this cover and live in a cold climate, it can be fun to make a trendy addition to your wardrobe. Another spray brand that I’ve found lately and love is Perfect Moment. The black and white printed bouffant pictured above is by Perfect Moment and so warm (and elegant)! I have a couple of great skate gear, too. (See more of my thoughts on the brand here.)

By the way, if you live in a really cold climate like me, having a high quality long lasting sprayer is really important. I have this incredibly warm maxi sprayer for those very cold days. I also love Hirno and Makaj.

If you need a sprayer, find more of my favorites here. Additionally, I link a few below…

#2) Fur coat or jacket

The next coat to have in your winter wardrobe is a faux fur coat. If faux fur isn’t your style, there are plenty of other options out there. But a faux fur coat can look luxurious and elegant during the winter season. I’ve tried a few faux fur options and this brown Blank NYC jacket is one I’ve kept and have been wearing for years. It’s a beautiful, warm color and easy to layer. If you’re shopping for a faux fur coat, choose one that matches the rest of your wardrobe… Neutral colors like black, white, brown or tan will be the most versatile. I’ve linked to some of my favorites below…

#3) Neutral long coat or duster

A long coat is absolutely essential for winter… even better if it’s a wool and/or cashmere blend! I have quite a few in my coat collection but I would say the coats I wear the most are the long, neutral coats. Don’t get me wrong, I love the distinct coat, but if we’re focusing on versatility, something even better is neutral. I love the cool wrap coat like the Ralph Lauren option I’m wearing above. When you’re layering it’s important to create some defining the waist. Look for wrap coats, belted coats, A-line coats, or any other detail that will help create the illusion of a waist. I’ve linked to some great options below…

#4) Leather/faux leather jacket

If you don’t have a black leather/faux leather jacket, you need to get one! It’s an easy way to add feature to your look. A leather or faux leather jacket is on my wardrobe essentials checklist. Get the checklist by signing up here. If you already have the black jacket, you can spice up your look with a more interesting jacket. I have a huge selection of styles, colors and love to get and change my clothes instantly. A good brand to look for for affordable jackets is BlankNYC. I’ve linked to some options below.

#5) Trench Coat

For those warmer days or those who don’t live in a very cold climate, a trench coat is a great medium weight coat to have on hand. It’s also perfect for travel or for a few days when it’s cold or rainy. It’s a very stylish option, and the classic trench will go with everything! The trench I’m wearing is not the most basic and classic option but it is bewitching I have worn it a lot. I’m also linking to some additional options below.

Bonus! coat statement

If you’ve already covered all these basics, go for a fun statement coat! This light pink trench coat definitely packs you in. It’s a very elegant and sophisticated coiled coat, but the pink color makes it all the more fun and exciting. It is also very flattering due to the tied waist. The quality is great and the weight is excellent (medium weight). You can still layer a little under it too…even a jacket. It’s rare to find a coat that covers the jacket. If pink isn’t your style, it also comes in eight other colors including a pretty winter white! I’m sharing some affordable statement coats below.
