Injectables and high-powered lasers work wonders to make our faces look more youthful, various cosmetic surgeries and sculpting treatments work to rewind the clock on our bodies, but what about our smiles? Many people overlook the importance of your smile when investing in anti-aging, but a quick trip to the dentist could make all the difference.
Which procedures will make your smile younger often depends on what you’re working with, so you’ll want to discuss your specific needs with your provider, but there are a few popular options. “A younger-looking smile can be achieved in a number of different ways, from minimally invasive treatments to full mouth reconstruction, says Chicago cosmetic dentist Nathan Hoffman, DDS. “Finding the best treatment for you depends on your unique oral needs and desired end goal.” We had dentists recommend some of the top treatments they suggest to help take years off of an aging smile.
Get your teeth whitened
If your teeth are already healthy and straight, a whitening treatment can be just what you need to inject your smile with a younger appearance. San Francisco cosmetic dentist Swati Agarwal, DDS notes that discolored or stained teeth can age your smile, but whitening can be a quick fix.
“A whitening treatment can brighten the teeth up and give a more youthful look with very little cost and little effort,” says Los Altos, CA cosmetic dentist Joseph Field, DDS. According to Dr. Hoffman, “studies show that when it comes to teeth, people associate a brighter smile with being healthier and more youthful.”
Fix chipped or worn teeth
“As we age, our teeth do as well. They get worn, chipped or cracked. Teeth can be a dead giveaway for age. To achieve a younger, more youthful smile, talk to your dentist about options,” advises Dr. Agarwal. “It could be as simple as tooth-colored resin bonding to fix the wear and chips.”
Whether your teeth won’t respond to whitening or you have more serious chips, veneers are a great solution. Dr. Field says in these kinds of cases, or when people want “to change the look or shape or color of their teeth, that’s where porcelain veneers come into play.”
Dr. Hoffman adds that “as we age, our teeth naturally discolor, shift and show signs of wear—all of which make us look older. By creating an ideal and natural-looking appearance to the teeth using porcelain veneers, we can actually turn back time.”
Try a smile makeover with full mouth reconstruction
Beverly Hills cosmetic dentist Victoria Veytsman, DDS suggests a full smile makeover and full mouth reconstruction with porcelain veneers, crowns and bridges. “We can change the color size and width of a smile with porcelain. We can restore tooth structure that’s been lost and thereby restore the dimensions and proportions of the face,” says Dr. Veytsman. “We take a macro view of aesthetics when it comes to the smile—we look at the entire face and try to establish youth harmony.”
Option for straightening options
For patients with white and healthy teeth that aren’t well-positioned, Dr. Field suggests Invisalign or other orthodontic treatments. Straightening the teeth will give your smile a more healthy, youthful look, he explains.
Ask About Filler
“A Juvéderm treatment can do wonders in turning back the clock, especially when it comes to your mouth,” says Dr. Hoffman. “As we age, the ligaments around our mouth and chin loosen, causing sagging. As a result, deep lines around the mouth (also called nasolabial folds) become more visible. Treating lines and folds around the mouth with dermal fillers is a great way to achieve a younger-looking smile.”
