As I approach my fifth month postpartum, the amount of hair that comes out on my brush is jaw-dropping, not mentioning the shedding on every sweater, and every surface of my house (to my husband’s dismay, and my own). This is directly related to something called telogen effluvium, which is a type of temporary hair loss that occurs as the result of dramatic hormonal shifts post-baby. However, in general, hair shedding doesn’t discriminate: it’s not just a post-baby issue; anyone with hair can experience it.
And the hair-care industry is taking notice. Different than products for thinning hair or hair regrowth, the latest crop of treatment-based shampoos, conditioners and scalp elixirs share the goal of strengthening hair at its core to reduce breakage and the subsequent, and albeit frustrating, falling out. “Prevention from breakage is important because your skin, which can regenerate itself, unlike hair breakage is irreversible,” says Michele Burgess, executive director of product development for Oribe Hair Care. These are the top “anti-fall” formulas on our radar right now.
Dr. Barbara Sturm Anti-Hair Fall Shampoo ($60) and Scalp Serum ($100)
Dr. Barbara Sturm formulated this gentle shampoo with camellia and larch extracts, plus panthenol, to nourish and strengthen the hair follicle to reduce breakage and fallout. Use it with the serum—apply it directly to a wet or dry scalp and the ends of your hair and gently massage in with your fingers (don’t wash it out)—for stronger, shinier hair and optimal scalp health..
OGX Anti-Fall + Coconut Caffeine Shampoo & Conditioner ($6 each)
Despite these being two of the yummiest-scented products to come across my desk as of late, this new duo helps reinforce hair’s natural strength with caffeine, coffee extract and coconut oil for fuller, stronger strands. Plus, the shampoo is free of sulfated surfactants, but still gives a generous lather.
Oribe Hair Alchemy Resilience Shampoo ($49), Resilience Conditioner ($52) and Fortifying Treatment Serum ($64)
Oribe hit a home run with this collection. Not only do you get the brand’s addictive signature scent, but after just one use, I noticed a difference in my hair, both look and feel. Featuring a strengthening blend of bio-fermented bamboo leaf, chia seed and plant-based protein, the trio penetrates the hair’s cortex to fortify from the inside out and forms a protective shield around each hair fiber to stabilize weak strands.
In the brand’s consumer panel survey of 106 women, after just one use, 81-percent of users felt their hair was more fortified, and after one week, 82-percent felt their hair was stronger from root to tip and more resistant to breakage.
JVN Complete Pre-Wash Scalp Oil ($28)
I know we’re all trying to find ways to save time in our routines, but this is one step worth adding if breakage is an issue. Before shampooing, part your hair into sections and apply the oil along your part lines, massaging it in as you go, and then wash out. JVN’s key ingredient, hemisqualane, marries with nutrient-rich botanicals to help strengthen hair from the scalp, and in a 21-day consumer study of 38 subjects, a whopping 97-percent of users saw 97 percent less hair fall when using the oil once a week.
Not Your Mother’s Naturals Superior Strength Rice Water & Himalayan Moringa Shampoo, Conditioner ($8 each) and Protein Rinse ($9)
The Kardashians may have made the rice water hair trend famous, but Not Your Mother’s has found a way to bottle the goods at a crazy value, with 98-percent naturally derived ingredients. We love the beautiful floral-ish scent, too, and when paired with the conditioner, the result is more resilient hair with less breakage and a serious infusion of shine.
There’s also a nourishing Protein Rinse that’s meant to be used post-shampoo: Split hair into sections, apply onto your part lines and leave on for three to five minutes before rinsing out. It’s silicone-free, yet leaves hair baby-soft.
